By far one of my strongest skills is organization. Seriously, I’m known for organizing all the things at work and home. Thankfully it filters to time management and scheduling for us because otherwise hockey would break me. My personality is well suited for it too, as chaos generally sends me into a tailspin.
Now here’s the thing, at some point between Boy #2 and Boy #3, keeping all the information in my head no longer became practical. Or even feasible. There was just too much to remember. Between my schedule, our business, the boys’ activities and the school schedule, the wheels started falling off the memory banks. Add in sleep deprivation and it was a recipe for disaster.
The first thing I did was get one of those big “mom calendars” and put it on the fridge. And that worked for the most part but it didn’t cover all the last minute minor things that came up and there were too many days where I rushed out of the house bound for work, forgetting that the school needed something sent in, or there was a field trip, or that I had planned on taking something out of the freezer for dinner. Whatever it was, it was a last minute thing that didn’t make it on the calendar.
So the system needed some correction. In comes the white boards. Now I just found three 8.5×11 inch ones that suited me. I’m sure a bigger one would have worked well too, but it didn’t sit with my style or the inner workings of my brain. but that’s where the lists of HbH orders go, the reminders that one of the boys has skating or something needed for school what have you and a third because I like things in threes. At some point I’m sure there will be a use for the third. Probably messages to my husband as our ships pass in the night because #hockey.
Now you would think that this would be sufficient, but you would be wrong. I have a full time job in addition to everything else and therefore spend a good chunk of my time sitting in an office. And I quite like my job, but I would often get a phone call or text asking what we had going this weekend or evening as there was last minute training coming up that he needed to confirm attendance asap. Hard to refer to a calendar that is at home on the fridge.
System version 3.0 is currently in effect. And so far it seems to work. We have the white boards for the last minute stuff, or the information that normally is stored in my head but that needs to be shared with the husband and for the outstanding HbH orders that need to be printed. There is the fridge calendar with the hockey schedules (all three of them) and my running schedule on it. The work calendar has become it’s own being. Husband knows that it is the hub from which I keep the House of Men running. Appointments, PD days, holidays, scheduled races, training, it all goes on the calendar.
I wish I could say there was one calendar to rule us all (because you have to love a Lord of the Rings reference) but the truth is, it just takes so much more than that.
